It is recognised in the industry that issues to do with lost luggage are one of the top three causes of frustration for air travelers.
In an attempt to overcome this, the industry has been trialing technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) but its likely to be five to ten years before we can expect to see these systems in most airports.
In the meantime, a whole new industry has grown up to try and reduce the frustration for passengers. There are increasing numbers of companies offering inexpensive, robust (even permanently applied or stitched-in) luggage labels with unique numbers linked to a central computer database. Now, if your luggage gets misplaced it can be traced and quickly returned to you
