If you are one of those people who enjoy mixing a relaxing beach holiday with some gentle exploration of local cultural, historic or natural places of interest then it's worth taking a look at the World Heritage List before you head off.
The list includes 911 cultural and heritage sites that the committee considers have outstanding universal value. These include 704 cultural, 180 natural and 27 mixed property locations in 151 of the 'States Parties' (countries that adhere to the World Heritage Convention).
Countries such as Italy (45 property locations), Spain (42) and Greece (17) all do well but most countries feature on the list including Brazil (18), Egypt (17) and tiny Cape Verde (1) so it shouldn't be difficult to add a spot of cultural research wherever you visit!
